      Meteogram Sea & Surf

Meteogram Sea & Surf is a 7-day forecast diagram showing conditions for outdoor activities near the sea, such as sailing or surfing. It visualises:
      • Wind direction and speed at 10m (grey) and 80m (dark blue), plus gusts (light blue).
      • Precipitation amount and weather symbols (sunshine, clouds, precipitation type, thunderstorms).
      • Wave height: significant (dark blue), swell (grey), wind wave (light blue).
      • Wave direction (arrows) and wave period: primary (red) and swell (grey).
      • Day length in yellow and night in white as background shading.

      How it works

      • Wind speed shows the average for the past hour; gusts are the maximum within the same period.
      • Significant wave height = average of the highest 33% of all waves, a good match for what an observer sees.
      • Swell waves are generated far away and travel long distances; wind waves are caused by local winds.
      • Wave and wind directions use the same convention: the direction they come from.
      • Time axis uses local time valid when the forecast is created.

      Limitations

      • Only available for locations close to the sea.
      • Local wave and wind conditions can vary significantly due to coastal features.
      • Not suitable as a replacement for on-site measurements or for safety-critical decisions.

      Best use cases

      • Planning sailing, surfing, or other marine activities.
      • Monitoring nearshore wind and wave conditions.
      • Understanding short-term variability in sea states.
